Why Montana homes add one

An outage here isn't an inconvenience. It's a risk.

Winter storms, ice on the lines, and summer wind events can knock out power for hours — sometimes days. At −20°F, a house without heat becomes a pipe problem fast.

Heat stays on

Your furnace or boiler keeps running, so the house stays warm and pipes stay thawed through the coldest nights.

Well & septic keep working

On a well outside city water? No power means no water. A standby unit keeps the pump — and your toilets — working.

Food & freezers protected

A freezer full of elk, beef, and a year's groceries is worth protecting. No more racing a thaw during a long outage.

Internet & work stay up

Starlink, Wi-Fi, computers, and phones stay powered — important if you work from home or run a business from the house.

Medical & mobility

CPAPs, oxygen concentrators, powered beds, and chair lifts can't wait for the grid to come back. This keeps them running.

It runs itself

No dragging a portable out in a blizzard, no extension cords, no carbon-monoxide risk. It starts, runs a weekly self-test, and reports its status.

Backup power, three ways

Whole-home, secondary & off-grid power

However your place is set up, there's a generator configuration for it — and if you searched “generator near me,” “backup generator,” “backup power for my house,” or “off grid home,” you're in the right place.

Whole-home backup generator

The classic home generator setup: an automatic standby unit wired to your panel through a transfer switch. The power drops, the backup generator starts in about 10 seconds, and your whole house — heat, well, fridge, lights, internet — runs like nothing happened. No cords, no gasoline cans, no being home to start it.

Size a whole-home unit →

Secondary power for shops & barns

Montana properties run on outbuildings — shops, barns, well houses, guest houses, second homes. We set up secondary power two ways: one whole-property unit sized for house plus shop, or a dedicated generator for the outbuilding, so stock water, tools, and freezers stay protected even when the house is covered separately.

Ask about shop & barn power →

Off-grid home power

Living off the grid — or building an off grid home the power lines don't reach? A propane standby generator is the reliable backbone of off-grid home power: it auto-starts to recharge your battery bank and carry heavy loads like well pumps and heat when solar isn't keeping up, especially through Montana winters.

Sizing calculator

What size do you actually need?

“What size generator do I need for my home?” is the question we hear most — so we built the tool for it. Tick what has to stay on during an outage. We'll estimate the running load and point you to the right class of unit — your free site visit confirms it before anything is ordered.

Your outage load

Typical running watts shown — startup surges are handled in the recommendation.

* Managed loads — a load-management module lets a smaller generator run big appliances one at a time instead of all at once.

Montana cost guide

How much does a whole house generator cost in Montana?

The whole house generator cost question has two parts: the equipment, and the generator installation cost to hook it up. Here's the honest all-in picture before you ever request a quote.

Typical installed range

For the most common Montana setup — a 14–22 kW air-cooled whole-home generator with a 200A automatic transfer switch.

$9,500 – $15,000

Fully installed: generator + transfer switch, pad and placement, permits, licensed electrical hookup, and licensed gas work.

Equipment alone runs $3,749–$7,181 for the Champion and Generac units in the lineup above. This range is a planning guide, not a quote — your free site assessment produces one firm, itemized number for your exact property, and that's the number you sign on.

Get my firm installed price

What moves the installation cost

Every property is different. These are the factors that push a job toward the low or high end of the range:

  • Gas run length — a short propane or natural-gas line near the meter costs far less than a long trench across the yard
  • Panel work — a modern 200A panel is straightforward; older panels or a service upgrade add electrical scope
  • Placement & pad — distance from the panel and meter, concrete vs. composite pad, and access for delivery
  • Brand & size — Champion vs. Generac, and 14 kW vs. 22 kW equipment pricing
  • Permits & inspection — electrical and gas permits are included in the installed price, never surprise add-ons
  • Cold-weather kit — battery warmer and block heater, recommended for Montana winters

Searching “generator installation near me” to compare installed prices? Ask every bidder for the same thing: one itemized total covering equipment, pad, permits, electrical, and gas. That's the only apples-to-apples number.

How install works

One call. We coordinate the rest.

You deal with one local point of contact. Behind the scenes we schedule the pad, the licensed electrician, and the licensed gas fitter around each other — so the job flows instead of stalling between trades.

Together

What we handle

  • Selling you the right-sized generator & transfer switch
  • Site assessment, placement, and the concrete / composite pad
  • Delivery and setting the unit in place
  • Scheduling and coordinating all trades around each other
  • Startup day, walkthrough, and warranty registration
  • Ongoing maintenance plans and annual service

One contract, one point of contact, one schedule — ours.

What the licensed pros handle LICENSED WORK

  • Transfer switch & panel wiring — licensed electrician
  • Electrical permit & inspection sign-off
  • Propane / natural-gas line — licensed plumber / gas fitter
  • Gas permit & pressure test

Montana requires licensed trades for electrical and gas work, and the permit holder has to do their own work — nobody can legally “sign off” on someone else's wiring. We built our process around that from day one, so your install is permitted, inspected, and insurable.

Set on a proper pad.
Built to run for decades.

A standby generator is a 15–20 year appliance. Placement, clearances, fuel sizing, and a level pad decide whether it starts on the coldest night of the year — we don't shortcut any of it.

  • Level composite or concrete pad, code clearances
  • Cold-weather kit available for Montana winters
  • Battery warmer & block heater options

Generator service, repair & monitoring

Buying the generator is step one. Keeping it ready for the next outage is the rest of the job — and it's ours, for both brands we sell.

Service & repair

  • Won't-start troubleshooting and diagnostics on Generac & Champion units
  • Error-code and fault diagnosis, battery testing & replacement
  • Exercise-cycle failures and transfer-switch problems
  • Post-storm checks after major outages
  • Warranty repairs coordinated with the manufacturer

Generator down or showing a fault? Call or text (406) 521-0015 — start with the brand, model, and what the controller is showing, and we'll take it from there.

Maintenance & monitoring

  • Scheduled generator maintenance — oil, filters, plugs, inspection, load test
  • Remote monitoring via Generac Mobile Link or Champion aXis alerts
  • Weekly self-test results watched — faults surface before an outage does
  • We reach out when your unit reports a problem; you don't have to watch an app
  • Maintenance plans for both brands — see the plans above

A standby generator only matters on the one night it has to start. Generator maintenance plus monitoring is how you know it will.

Straight answers

Questions everyone asks

How fast does it come on?
About 10 seconds after the power drops, the transfer switch starts the generator and moves your home onto it automatically. When grid power returns, it switches back and shuts down on its own. You don't touch anything — it works the same if you're home, at work, or out of state.
Propane vs natural gas — which fuel is better for a home generator?
If you have natural gas service, that's the simplest — no tank to refill. Most homes across our service area on acreage run propane, which works just as well; we size the line and talk through tank size for multi-day runtime during your site visit. Diesel and liquid-cooled options are available for larger properties — quoted per site.
How long can it run?
As long as it has fuel and oil. On a typical residential propane setup, plan on days of runtime, not hours. The unit also runs a short self-test every week so problems surface before an outage does.
Is it loud?
Modern air-cooled standby units run at roughly conversation-to-dishwasher level at normal load, and much quieter during their weekly exercise. Placement during the site visit keeps sound away from bedrooms and neighbors.
Do I need permits?
Yes — an electrical permit for the transfer switch work and a gas permit for the fuel line. Our licensed partners pull their own permits and the work is inspected. That's what keeps your homeowner's insurance and the manufacturer's warranty happy.
What does the warranty cover?
It depends on the brand — one of the real differences between the two price points. Champion's aXis generators carry a 10-year limited warranty, the longest in the class. Generac's air-cooled units carry a 5-year limited warranty, with extended 7- and 10-year options available at purchase. Either way, we register everything for you at startup and give you the paperwork in writing.
Generac or Champion — which should I pick?
Both do the same job: automatic whole-home backup on propane or natural gas, with a 200-amp transfer switch. Champion costs less up front — about $490 less at the popular 22 kW size — and carries the longer warranty (10 years vs. 5). Generac is the #1-selling brand with the biggest dealer and parts network, purpose-built engines, and cellular monitoring built in. If budget leads, go Champion; if brand support leads, go Generac. We'll lay both numbers side by side in your written quote so you can decide with real figures.
Can I finance it?
Yes — most customers split the project into a deposit at signing, a payment when the unit is delivered, and the balance at startup. Ask on your assessment call about current financing options and terms.
Do you install home generators near me in Montana?
If you're in western Montana, very likely yes. We're based in Helena and install whole-home standby generators across the Helena area, the Gallatin Valley (Bozeman, Belgrade, Big Sky and the Yellowstone Club area), Townsend, Butte, Great Falls, and Missoula — plus the communities around each. Most jobs are coordinated remotely with local licensed trades, so distance isn't a barrier. Call (406) 521-0015 to confirm your address.
Can a standby generator power an off-grid home or cabin?
Yes. For off-grid properties, a propane standby generator works as the reliable backbone alongside solar and batteries — it auto-starts to recharge batteries and carry heavy loads like well pumps and heat when the sun isn't keeping up. We size off-grid setups around your battery bank, inverter, and winter loads during the free site assessment.
Can one generator provide secondary power for a shop, barn, or second home?
Yes — secondary (backup) power for outbuildings is one of the most common Montana setups. Depending on distance and load, that can mean a whole-property standby unit sized for house plus shop, or a dedicated unit for the shop, barn, or guest house. We map both options with firm pricing at your free assessment.
What size generator do I need for my home?
Start with what has to stay on. Essentials only — heat, well pump, fridge, some lights — usually lands at 14 kW with load management. Most family homes that want the whole panel, A/C included, land at 22 kW. Large homes, shops, and everything-at-once properties go 26–27 kW. The sizing calculator above gives you a real estimate from your actual loads, and the free site assessment confirms the size against your panel and fuel before anything is ordered.
How much does a home generator cost in Montana?
For a typical 14–22 kW whole-home system, plan on roughly $9,500–$15,000 fully installed in Montana — equipment, pad, permits, and the licensed electrical and gas hookup included. Equipment alone runs $3,749–$7,181 for the units we list. Your exact generator installation cost depends mostly on the gas run length, panel work, and placement, and your free site assessment turns the range into one firm written number before you sign anything. See the cost guide above for the full breakdown.
I searched for a Generac dealer near me / Generac installer near me — is that you?
If you're in western Montana, yes. 406 Generators is based in Helena, sells Generac and Champion whole-home generators ordered through Generac's dealer program, and coordinates generator installation near you with licensed Montana electricians and gas fitters — across Helena, Bozeman, Belgrade, Big Sky, Butte, Great Falls, Missoula, and the towns around them.
Do you offer generator maintenance after the install?
Yes — generator maintenance is part of owning one of our installs, not an afterthought. Annual and twice-yearly plans cover oil, filters, plugs, inspection, and load testing for both Generac and Champion units, and remote monitoring (Generac Mobile Link or Champion aXis) lets faults surface between visits. See the maintenance plans and the service & monitoring section above.
What's the best backup generator for a Montana home?
For most Montana homes, it's an air-cooled whole-home standby unit in the 14–22 kW range, running on propane or natural gas with a 200-amp automatic transfer switch. Within that class, Generac is the premium pick — the #1-selling brand with the deepest parts and service network — and Champion is the value pick with a lower price and a 10-year warranty. Add a cold-weather kit for sub-zero starts, and size it around your heat, well pump, and winter loads. Our sizing calculator above gives you a starting point, and the free site assessment confirms the exact unit before you buy.
What's the difference between a portable generator and a standby generator?
A portable has to be dragged out, fueled, started by hand, and connected with extension cords or a manual inlet — and it can't run while you're away. A standby generator is permanently installed on a pad outside your home, plumbed to propane or natural gas, and wired through an automatic transfer switch: it starts itself in about 10 seconds, powers your panel directly, and shuts down when grid power returns. For Montana winters and second homes, that automatic part is the whole point.

How the agreement works

Every install is covered by a simple written Purchase & Installation Coordination Agreement. The plain-English version:

  1. Scope in writing. Generator model, transfer switch, pad, placement, and exactly which trade does which part — no vague “install included.”
  2. One firm price. The quote itemizes equipment, site prep, permits, and licensed electrical & gas work. Change orders only with your signature.
  3. Simple payments. Deposit at signing, progress payment on delivery, balance only after startup and your walkthrough.
  4. Permits & inspection. Licensed partners pull their permits; work isn't “done” until it passes inspection.
  5. Warranty registered. Manufacturer warranty registered in your name at startup; paperwork handed to you.
  6. Service promise. One point of contact — us — for scheduling, questions, and maintenance after the sale.

This outline is a summary for planning, not legal advice. Your signed agreement is the full document you review before any deposit.
